What Are the Causes and Symptoms of TMJ Disorder?

In this video, Dr. Chance McLemore explains common causes and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), helping patients understand how it can impact their quality of life. To identify the root cause of your TMD symptoms and explore effective treatments, schedule an appointment at Riviera Dental Care today.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) can have multiple causes, often stemming from past injuries, lifestyle habits, or gradual wear and tear on the jaw joint.

Some common causes include:

  • Past injuries – A childhood fall or impact that jammed the jaw into the joint, leading to long-term inflammation or disk damage.
  • Whiplash or trauma – A car accident or sudden impact can force the jaw forward, affecting the joint capsule and tendons.
  • Chronic clenching and grinding – Often caused by stress, this can lead to muscle inflammation and joint strain.
  • Normal wear and tear – Over time, the joint may naturally degrade, contributing to pain and dysfunction.TMD can result in a wide range of symptoms, including:
  • Jaw pain or soreness in the muscles
  • Tension headaches, particularly in the temple area
  • Bite misalignment, where one side feels higher or more forceful than the other
  • Limited jaw movement, making it difficult to open or close the mouth fully
  • Jaw locking after yawning or biting into food
  • Neck pain, which can contribute to additional discomfort
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Pain in the back of the head

Because TMD presents differently for each patient, identifying the underlying cause is essential for effective treatment.

There are several ways to restore your smile after tooth loss. The difference in these methods, however, typically lies in their stability and permanence.
