Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) can have multiple causes, often stemming from past injuries, lifestyle habits, or gradual wear and tear on the jaw joint.
Some common causes include:
- Past injuries – A childhood fall or impact that jammed the jaw into the joint, leading to long-term inflammation or disk damage.
- Whiplash or trauma – A car accident or sudden impact can force the jaw forward, affecting the joint capsule and tendons.
- Chronic clenching and grinding – Often caused by stress, this can lead to muscle inflammation and joint strain.
- Normal wear and tear – Over time, the joint may naturally degrade, contributing to pain and dysfunction.TMD can result in a wide range of symptoms, including:
- Jaw pain or soreness in the muscles
- Tension headaches, particularly in the temple area
- Bite misalignment, where one side feels higher or more forceful than the other
- Limited jaw movement, making it difficult to open or close the mouth fully
- Jaw locking after yawning or biting into food
- Neck pain, which can contribute to additional discomfort
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Pain in the back of the head
Because TMD presents differently for each patient, identifying the underlying cause is essential for effective treatment.
