Temporary Teeth vs. Final Implant Restoration: What’s the Difference?
In this video, Dr. Thomas Hanson explains how temporary dentures differ from final implant restorations in fit, function, and appearance.
Here at Riviera Dental, when somebody’s transitioning from having teeth to a denture, looking forward to an implant denture in the final stage of the treatment, they have to wear a temporary denture. A temporary denture is made to wear while you’re healing because we have to remove the teeth and put bone grafts in, and then you have to wear something for 3 months.
So what we come up with is a temporary denture or interim denture. It’s going to be loose. It’s not going to be tight, and we have to use Fixodent because we’re preserving all the bone we can. When you do that, the denture has to be designed to accommodate the extra bone, so we don’t get that good fit like we’d like to in regular conventional dentures.
They’re made out of regular acrylic and denture teeth. Once we get through the 3-month stage, we start placing the implants and fabricating the permanent Fix on Six or hybrid denture. The hybrid denture has a metal framework inside it that makes it stronger, and it has the attachment that goes on top of the mini implants once the mini implants are placed in your mouth.
If you go with the Fix on Six, it’s porcelain. It looks beautiful. It looks like a real bridge, and that snaps on. And again, like we say, it’s easier to clean, it’s easier to take care of, and a lot of people love it. The hybrid denture still looks like a typical denture, and some people don’t want that.
As far as eating with your temporary or interim denture, you’re going to find that you probably have 30% of your typical eating ability, or what you’re used to. But once you get the final snap-on hybrid denture, snap-on Fix on Six, or cemented roundhouse bridge, you’ll find that you’re back to 100% eating capacity.
