Why Do Immediate Dentures Get Loose During Healing?
In this video, Dr. Thomas Hanson explains why immediate dentures may feel loose during healing and how adjustments and relines improve their fit.
We have a lot of people who come in for a 1-day denture service, and they’re wanting their remaining teeth removed so they can transition into a denture.
At first, we cannot make the denture really tight because you’re healing, and if we did make it too tight, it would hurt you to wear it. So for the first 6 weeks, you have to use some denture adhesive.
Once the 6 weeks go by, you come in for what we call a soft temporary liner, and we place that. After that, most patients are just like, “That’s like night and day.” They’re so much happier at that point.
Then they wear that for 6 months to a year. Once a year goes by, we come back in for what they call a lab liner. Each time we put a liner in, the purpose of the liner is to tighten it up and make it fit your gums better.
