TMJ Splint vs. Nightguard vs. Sleep Apnea Appliance
In this video, Dr. Chance McLemore explains the differences between nightguards, TMJ splints, and sleep apnea appliances.
There’s a lot of confusion about the oral appliances that we use in dentistry. Many people are familiar with a night guard or an occlusal guard. This is used mainly to protect your teeth from clenching or grinding that you may do in your sleep.
A TMJ appliance is something that’s different. It’s used to slightly change the position of your lower jaw in relation to your upper jaw to help reduce and treat your TMJ symptoms.
A sleep appliance is somewhat similar to a TMJ appliance, as its purpose is to reposition the lower jaw to help open your airway and help you breathe at night.
